About Our Qualifiers

Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith will be competing in the 50m and 100m Butterfly. Going into this year Andrew had clocked up Silver medals at the English schools and was looking to get into his favoured event, the 200m Fly but his strength and speed have really come to the fore this year and his shorter distances have developed giving him some outstanding swims. Andrew’s achievement is even more impressive when you consider that Andrew is still at the bottom of the age group and whilst final places are in reach, he should be looking to make his mark as best he can in both the 50m Fly where he is 3rd in the UK (for 13 year olds) and the longer sprint, the 100m Fly.

Gabriella Doughty

Gabriella was one of only 2 swimmers from Wiltshire to be selected to take part in the England Talent Development Camp in October, a process she learnt a lot from. Specialising in sprint backstroke Gabriella will be competing in the 50m and the 100m backstroke at the ASA Nationals. At the South West Regional Championships Gabriella took 2 silver medals in these events but recording some very fast times taking her to number 7 in the UK rankings. Gabriella is top of the age group at these championships and will be doing her best to make finals in both events with her eye a medal at all times.

James Andrew

James has had a fantastic year in 2016 and really come to the fore in the distance events. Taking Tigersharks first gold medal at the South West Regional Championships in the 1500m Freestyle James converted this to great success at the South West open water championships taking gold in the 1500m FC in the sea at Weymouth. This performance gave James automatic qualification for the National Open Water championships where he and his team mates will swap the sea for a lake as they compete against the best in the Country.

Leia Griffiths

Leia is also taking part in the National Open Water championships having come 3rd in the South West Regional Championships. Having made finals at the South West championships in the pool Leia managed to go one better in the cold sea of Weymouth. Leia has come back really well from a nasty illness which took her out of the training pool for four months over the winter and to get to these championships has been a long but worthwhile road back.

Ryan Lawrence

Ryan is more known as a specialist backstroke swimmer but took the sea at Weymouth with great aplomb. Following in close behind James Ryan put in a sterling performance to take the bronze medal at the South West Open Water championships and book his place in the lakes of South Yorkshire. A multi-talented young man who plays football at a high level Ryan will no doubt draw on all his experience in both sports and deliver a great swim at Sheffield.

Getting 5 swimmers to the Nationals is a great achievement for a small club such as Tigersharks and we are sure that they will do us proud and we wish them all the very best in their efforts.
